Joe Gilhooley LRPS   European Badgers   Tuesday 8th February 2022 - I spent about 7 hours in Ron McCombe's terrific wildlife hide in Scottish Borders. My 10th visit to the badger hide since October 2020. Ron has set it up to bring European Badgers to the area. Takes patience as badgers can come at any time. Their sense of hearing is acute so you have to keep very still and quiet. Well worth contacting Ron McCombe and booking a slot. Or in his wildbirds hide. Both hides are heated and Ron gives very useful photography assistance. In winter, the badgers do not hibernate. They do stay underground in the Sett until hunger drives them to search for food. Badgers came to the area , about 20 metres from me, about four times during the seven hours. Visits are slow during the winter months. I plan to go back in mid March. Ron now has a reflection pool right in front of the photography hide. Badgers are showing an interest in it. Will make for super photographs with badger's reflection in the water. There is also a large hollow log that the badgers are coming through. For this visit. I used my Canon 1dx MkII Camera. Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS II USM Lens . All the 29 images here are uncropped as from camera. As a bonus I caught photographs of a Red Fox. I think it is a male "dog" fox. Then a black cat sat inside the log hiding from the rain.
