Acharn on Loch Tay
Where Loanhead Scouts Camped in 1976

Tuesday 30th May 2023

The beautiful Loch Tay is a freshwater loch in the central highlands of Scotland, in the Perth and Kinross and Stirling council areas. It is the largest body of fresh water in Perth and Kinross, and the sixth largest loch in Scotland.

Acharn on Loch Tay is a special place for me. In the summer of 1976 I was one of about 18 Scouts from the 19th Loanhead , Midlothian Scout Troop spent a camping week on the banks of Loch Tay at Acharn. A very simple unofficial camp site. We had no facilities. Slept in three tents. 6 boys to a tent. We dug in a latrine toilet. Build a rope bridge over the small river. It was one of the best Scout camps I was on as a boy.

During a photography day on 30th May 2023, I visited the area of the camping site. I found it. All overgrown and the loch water a lot lower, allowing more of the shore stones to show.
