Joe Gilhooley LRPS   European Badgers     Thursday 4th April 2024 I spent over 7 hours in Ron McCombe's terrific wildlife hide in Scottish Borders. Ron has set it up to bring European Badgers to the area. Takes patience as badgers can come at any time. Their sense of hearing is acute so you have to keep very still and quiet. Well worth contacting Ron McCombe and booking a slot. Or in his wildbirds hide. Both hides are heated and Ron gives very useful photography assistance. The night started dry. Then torrential rain came on. This then limited the badgers visiting. I still got visits about every 25 - 30 mins. Mostly lone badgers. Ron has a reflection pool right in front of the photography hide. Badgers are showing an interest in it, makes super photographs with badger's reflection in the water. I was thrilled when the badgers came to the pool and I got my most wanted Badger Reflections. For this visit. I used my Canon 1dx MkII Camera. As an experiment. This time I used my Canon EF 400mm f2.8L IS III USM Lens. It is terrific in low light . All images here are as from camera uncropped. I use minus one stop exposure compensation so not to burn out the white on badger's face. Shutter was 1/100 second. I had ISO at 4000. I took over 250 badgers photos and kept many images 20 are on this page . As mentioned, all are uncropped and as from camera. I love the moment a badger comes through the hollow log. Also when the venture onto logs at reflection pool. The reflection pool is maybe 7 metres from the hide. The lens just got the whole badger and reflection in the camera frame. It may have been April. I drove through heavy snow on A68 at Soutra on way back to Midlothian at 4am.
